Cameron Williamson
Abandoned RAF Driffield.

I did some research on political cartoons and influential street art and found a few pieces that sparked influence for my own piece showing me how others have conveyed political and social views via their art. I started to brainstorm and think about matters that I feel impacted by and that I am knowledgeable of. After some sketching and trial and error I came to my concluding idea of a baby wearing a flat cap, with a cigarette hanging from it's mouth, with the title Indoctrinated Youth.

The meaning behind the title of this piece is to project the idea of certain hand-me-down opinions that leave no space for mindsets to progress hence the baby having an old face, I feel that among my generation politics sometimes has no space to progress due to people being spoon fed outdated ideas from their predecessors. I chose the cigarette as I wanted to show that this is a derogatory thing to us - with the cigarette sharing the derogatory connotations. I chose his hat to be a flat cap as to me this seems to have elderly connotations highlighting that these opinions and habits have been down multiple generations.

I decided to do this piece at an abandoned RAF base in Driffield as it felt like an interesting environment for my art to be displayed and I spent most of my day looking around the old RAF base - at previous art and taking inspiration from it. I was unsure whereabouts I could do this piece throughout the RAF base and where the environment would enhance the creativity of my piece. I eventually came across a derelict room with a small segment of the wall intact and still had white paint on it while the rest of the walls layer of paint had peeled away over time. I liked this as it further displayed the idea of corroded political views and with art coming from it showing there is still chance for good to emerge.

Various photographs taken throughout the day showing art I had found and our adventure through the abandoned base.
